LABOUR RESPOND TO SQA RESULTS
South Lanarkshire Labour have joined those congratulating pupils receiving SQA results today.
The performance of South Lanarkshire schools has again been praised. However, with news that the attainment gap has widened Scotland-wide, Labour have also highlighted the failure of the Scottish Government to deliver on their central ambition of closing the poverty-related attainment gap across the country.
Councillor Lynsey Hamilton, South Lanarkshire Labour Spokesperson for Education Resources, said: “Congratulations to all of those across South Lanarkshire who have officially received their SQA results. The whole community has to recognise the extraordinary efforts of pupils, who worked incredibly hard through an unprecedented year.
“We also have to recognise the hard work of our local schools and the invaluable support that parents and families have given to young learners.
“There is no question that Scottish education has been hindered by a lack of national leadership. Compared with last year, grades across Scotland are down and the attainment gap has widened. That is in no way a reflection of the hard work of local pupils, it is a reflection of the Scottish Government’s failure to tackle educational inequalities.”
