Teachers Need Our Support
Labour councillors have called for more support for South Lanarkshire’s teachers after a survey found that 70% of teachers in Scotland feel stressed ‘frequently or all of the time’.
The EIS survey of Scotland’s teaching workforce also found that half of all teachers describe their wellbeing at work as ‘poor’ or ‘very poor’ and only 15% have sought help from their school or local authority employer.
Councillor Lynsey Hamilton, Education Spokesperson for South Lanarkshire Labour, said: “Teachers are key workers we cannot do without. They have been working flat-out to support pupils in unprecedented times. They’ve been there for our children and young people throughout the Covid crisis and now we must be there for them.
“More should be done to identify the causes of workplace stress and find solutions in partnership with the workforce.
“We cannot seriously build a recovery in our schools on the backs of an over-worked and under-supported workforce, whether in teaching or in all the other occupations our schools depend on. Labour councillors will seek assurances that the Council is doing everything it can to promote staff wellbeing and to help people access support whenever it is needed.”
